Hello, I am so sorry that I had to cancel class. My flight was delayed. We will have our quiz on transcription, translation and mutations next class. We will be discussing a relatively new area of study in the area of DNA called epigenetics. Epigenetics allows for genes to be imprinted, turned on and off and controlled like a light is by a dimmer switch with the addition and deletion of chemical tags. Even more interesting is that we can control these chemical tags so it is a way that our behaviors and environment can change the expression of DNA and more importantly the DNA expression of our children and grandchildren. It is a fascinating area of genetic study.
A. Watch the video- Ghost in Your Genes on Vimeo (vimeo.com/248146854) B. Post a response to the video by 5/13. You do not need to respond to peers unless you want to. Don't forget: I need your written response to a science field trip (visiting a place, a video you watch, a book you read) to make up for a class. That is due by 6/7.

This activity is your assignment for the 4/23 class. Your initial post is due on or by 4/23 and peer response are due by 4/29.
A. Watch the PBS video: Cracking Your Genetic code www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Fq2mOCTX6k B. Respond to the following questions: a. Explain the connection between DNA, Protein, Mutations and Trait. b. There is much debate over the chance that gene mapping and manipulation will lead to the creation of designer babies (They mention the video GATTACA, if you are interested in watching it I have attached a link www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTzL7STxL3g). Address the following question and respond to your peers. b1. Do you agree with gene mapping and manipulation? Why or why not? b2. What are the benefits or drawbacks of gene mapping and manipulation today and in the future? C. Respond to peers. This assignment is to make up for our missed class on 4/9. This assignment can be posted or presented in class (I personally like to presented option because it gives you an opportunity to practice before the final.) It is due for the 4/30 class.
DNA Controversies There are many reasons to study DNA. It allows us to learn about the foundation of our genetic information and why mutations may or may not be a problem and much more. It also allows us to understand some of the controversies related to DNA and form an informed opinion about them. For this activity you are going to research a DNA controversy and share your knowledge. Your presentation/essay must include:
I am starting this discussion post for anyone to post video links or articles that they come across and find fascinating.
This assignment counts for attendance for 3/19. Your movie post is due on or by 3/19 and the essay is due on or by 3/25. Your response will be graded based on timeliness and quality. Assignment value: 35 pts
1. Watch the video: Hunting Nightmare Bacteria (The video should be hyperlinked but if it doesn't work then cut and paste it in.) www.pbs.org/video/hunting-nightmare-bacteria-update-nqil1d/ 2. Besides examining antibiotic resistant bacteria the other topic emphasized are nosocomial infections. "Nosocomial infections are often caused by breaches of infection control practices and procedures, unclean and non-sterile environmental surfaces, and/or ill hospital staff" (Nosocomial Infections & Hospital-Acquired Illness, n.d.). Nosocomial infections are community-based infections that are common in hospital, critical care, school and other community settings. The second part of your assignment is to investigate one of the common nosocomial infections listed below: Common Nosocomial Infections: 1. Staphylococcus aureus 2. Pseudomonas aeruginosa 3. Escherichia coli 4. Clostridium difficile 5. Acinetobacter baumannii 6. Stenotrophomonas maltophilia 7. Mycobacterium tuberculosis 8. Enterococcus gallinarum (Vancomycin-resistant) 9. Legionella pneumophila (Legionnaires' disease) Write an essay answering that includes the following information. Include in-text citations and a reference list: a. Provide a description of the bacteria that causes the infection. Your description should include shape, grouping and gram stain. b. What are the signs and symptoms of the infection causes by your bacteria? c. What part of the body are most affected by the bacteria? d. How is the infection treated? Is there issue with it being antibiotic resistant? e. Statistical information: what is the infection rate (frequency) of infection for your organism? Final essays should be posted on weebly 3. Weebly Post: a. nosocomial essay and b. indicate what was the most interesting, scary, or thought-provoking part of the movie for you. You do not need to respond to peers this week unless you want to. Reference: Nosocomial Infections & Hospital-Acquired Illness. (n.d). EHA Consulting Group, Inc. Complete the following virtual lab and answer the journal questions and table (icons at the bottom of the page under the directions) on a separate paper (not on website. You will pass in the answers in class). Glencoe: What Kills Germs? (10 pts) www.glencoe.com/sites/common_assets/science/virtual_labs/LS08/LS08.html Hello, this assignment and posting will be an attendance grade and a classwork grade. Post your essay on or by 5/28, and respond to 3 peers on or by 3/4. Please make sure you complete it on time and to the best of your ability because it is for a lot of points.
This week's assignment has a lot of detail, you will need to read each part carefully. Each of the videos included should be hyperlinked but if you have an issue opening them then just copy the URL and paste in the address to access the video. This is also an assignment that counts heavily (50 points)because of how much I am asking you to do. Here we go... Preparing for the essay: Part 1: Watch the video Understanding Embryonic Stem Cells (Douglas Melton, Ph.D.) (www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYNBNZJ8Xck) Part 2: Find two or more additional credible sources about stem cells to use for completing the assignment. Remember to note your sources as you go to add them to your reference page. Credible sources are .edu, org, or another reputable source, no blogs or wikipedia. Part 3: Complete the written essay - in-text citations and reference page required for all information that comes from a source other than yourself Include the following information in your essay:
Part 5: Respond to the paper of peers (10 points) I will provide feedback to your paper and you will be able to make revisions to is using my comments before a provide a final grade. My grading checklist: 1. Essay is grammatically correct and formatted as an essay without bullets: 10 points 2. Essay addresses all the required information with detail and appropriate support: 15 points 3. References are credible i.e. a .edu, .org or other reputable source: 5 points 4. In-text citations are properly formatted and there are only two or less direct quotes that are approximately seven words or less: 5 points 5. Reference page is properly formatted and in alphabetical order with a minimum of three references: 5 points 6. Responds to peers with detailed comments that illustrate that they read their peers essay. These comments include connections between their paper and yours, connection to life experience, acknowledgement of new information, added details that build on comments in the essay, etc: 10 points Total points: 50 I told you it was a lot. I hope you find this interesting and get a lot of information out of this assignment. Remember there is a stem cell aspect of your final project so you can cover two things at once with regards of your research. Helpful hints about in-text: 1. Direct quotes need to have parentheses and should be limited to around seven words. 2. There should not be more than two direct quotes in your paper. 3. Paraphrase information in your own words but if the majority of the information comes from a source a citation is needed. 4. Check out this website for some examples of in-text citations: Pellissippi State Community College Library (durhamtech.libguides.com/c.php?g=464476&p=3175461) Helpful hints about a reference page: 1. Use owl Purdue to help with formatting your references (owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/) 2. Your reference page should be in alphabetical order based on the first letter of the reference. Examples: Video citation for the video you are watching for the paper: Melton, D. (2006). Understanding embryonic stem cells. Howard Hughes Medical Institute Holiday Lecture.
