Hello, I am so sorry that I had to cancel class. Next week we will be getting into DNA and how it is used to determine traits. This video discusses a relatively new area of study in the area of DNA called epigenetics. Epigenetics allows for genes to be imprinted, turned on and off and controlled like a light is by a dimmer switch with the addition and deletion of chemical tags. Even more interesting is that we can control these chemical tags so it is a way that our behaviors and environment can change the expression of DNA and more importantly the DNA expression of our children and grandchildren. It is a fascinating area of genetic study.

Being a Yoga teacher, I have read articles on how the practice of yoga and meditation can positively influence our epigenome. So, when I saw this assignment, to watch the video Ghost in your Genes, I was excited to find out if there was research to support these recommendations. Although, there was not much detail about these practices, they did say that our behavior does have an effect on which genes are expressed.

This was a completely surprising and fascinating video. I was especially impressed by the research on the nurtured or licked rats versus the rats that were not cared for. While working toward a degree in Early Childhood Education, I learned of the importance of young children forming attachments. Children who were raised in environments where they did not form attachments had issues that followed them for years to come. I often wondered why there seemed to be this short window in the early months and why couldn't a child learn to form attachments when they were older.

I liked the analogy of what an epigenome is. It was said to think of your genome as the computer that stores all your information about yourself. The epigenome is the software that tells your genome when to work. Epigenetics is the study of chemical reactions that influence gene expression through activation or deactivation of genes at specific times and locations. The changes our influenced by various factors such as the environment, lifestyle, age, and disease state.

I also enjoyed learning about epigenetic therapy. I don’t quite understand how they do it, but understand the big picture. Epigenetic therapy changes the structure of the cancer cells. In layman’s terms from the video, it reminds them that they are human cells originally and that they shouldn’t be behaving this way.

I would like to begin my comment with a quotation by Luke Ford and he said, “Everything we do affects other people.”
