A mutation is a change in the genetic code of an organism, caused by either natural change, or caused by outside forces called "mutagens".

Mutation is a change that occurs in genes whether it be a mistake when the DNA is copied or from environmental factors such as UV light.

As in scary I assume you're referring to it being used for the wrong purpose. Like eugenics? If so I agree. Also I've got to wonder if something could ever go really really wrong and it turned into a real life scifi movie......

Yes, I am referring to the whole designer baby, cloning and eugenics aspects. We have seen issues with gene manipulation with things like GMO plants. Plants that have been modified still have the ability to cross-pollinate with native or wild plants allowing the manipulated gene to become part of the population without control or much previous knowledge of how it will effect the environment. So I don't think we have seen any movie level things yet but who knows for the future.

A Mutation occurs when a DNA gene is damaged or changed in a way to alter the genetic message carried by that gene.

I really like your ending sentences where you added that mutations have helped us understand human medicine and how to fight off the diseases. I completely agree.

Mutations, especially those that are visible and obvious to the human eye, have always captivated scientists and regular people alike. Mutations are truly fascinating, but what is exactly a mutation? A mutation is basically a change in the "recipe" of our genes, our DNA. It was a mistake that our natural "proof reading" enzymes missed when zipping and fixing our DNA strands. Mutations can be caused by three different ways, base substitution, deletion, and insertion.

Isn't it incredible to know mutations are happening in peoples bodies everyday? it's weird to think about it, and it's also interesting to know our enzymes cleared out our the bad and that's how we all (in the class at least) don't have additive parts to our body, but we do have mutations we never even knew about such as being sick to cow milk or not being sick to cow milk, luckily i became lucky with the mutation to help me break down the sugars in the milk to continue drinking it because I love milk! it's so fascinating.

What is a mutation? A mutation is a changing of a structure of a gene in some sort. It's a rearrangement of larger sections of chromosomes or genes. It could cause the animal to grow two heads, or even two legs, it depends where the mutation spreads. A mutation occurs when you're still in your mother and your body is growing and changing such as a natural process, there's a change in the DNA, when the cells in our body divide that's when the enzymes are suppose to come in hand and do there job getting rid of any negative such as growing mutation. When they don't divide that's when a mutation happens in a body which shows the enzyme didn't do its job, but without enzymes we would not be here.

A mutation is a permanent change in the DNA strand(s) that make up a gene, These gene changes can be hereditary: where this change in DNA is acquired from a parent and are in every cell in the body. Or this change in DNA can be Somatic: Where the gene change is caused by the environment or while the cell is dividing and the copy of the DNA is not a perfect copy, and are only present in some cells, not all.
